NTT telescope & the Milky Way

Lights from ... the NTT over La Silla

Our nightime walk at La Silla during the MeetESO event carried on, with a stop by the New Technology Telescope (NTT). Despite its modest 3.58 meters diameter compared to today's instruments, the NTT is by far one of the most iconic telescopes in the world. Why? Commissioned in 1989, it was the first of its kind to use active and adaptive optics systems aimed at reaching the theoretical level of resolution in imagery.

Being at the base of such an honorable monster of technologies was very emotional. Just by thinking that we were gently taking basic pictures of it, whereas in the meantime, the NTT was doing state-of-the-art research in astronomy!
